Dr. Accilien developed a love for both medicine and the Haitian culture through the example of his mother, Noel. Every visit to Haiti since then has been a revitalizing experience and serving the Haitian community has been a driving force in his life. After receiving his bachelor’s in Exercise Physiology at the University of Miami, he matriculated into FIU Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine where he met Dr. Stevenson Chery and Samuel Jean-Baptiste. Dr. Accilien is currently working as an Emergency Physician at the University of Chicago. His interests include health administration, global health policy, healthcare education, and sports medicine. Samuel Jean-Baptiste earned his BS in Applied Mathematics from Emory University in 2014 and subsequently matriculated at FIU Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine. He became interested in medicine after juxtaposing the health disparities he experienced in Haiti with that of socioeconomically disadvantaged individuals in the US. After a medical trip to Haiti, Sam progressively began to espouse the notion that science alone cannot address disease without a deeper understanding of the intricacies that predicate their occurrences. Sam is finishing his last year of medical school after completing a year-long Cancer and Radiation Biology Pre-Doctoral Research Fellowship at the University of Pennsylvania. He plans on pursuing a career in medicine in which he can address cancer disparities in Haitian and African-American population.

Joel is a native of Eight Mile Rock – a settlement located outside of the City of Freeport on the Island of Grand Bahama in the Bahamas. His love and interest for medicine began as he was noticing from a young age that there was so much more that he and everyone else in his community was missing as it relates to medicine and everything about it. After seeing how the lack of education from a medical perspective affected so many he made it his dream and goal to learn more about the field and making a decision to pursue it as it is his passion. He is an undergraduate student at Valencia College preparing for his matriculation to a University where he will complete his degree in Psychology and a minor in business. He hopes to go on to medical school to acquire his medical degree.
